Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. After her father died as a Carnival barker at the age of an infant and she was forced to support the family working both as a cook and server. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She quit the institution she was in after only two years to pursue a career as an actor. There were many hurdles to overcome on the path she chose to pursue. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime and drama, however no theater job opportunities came up. The next position she was offered was an "hat check" lady at a club until she decided to quit and returned to Boston. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also appeared at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first permanent acting gig. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
